Every drop that leaves a saw or a plasma table is either inventory or garbage, and the tag hanging off it decides which. Lose the heat number on a piece of 316L and you have bought yourself a remelt price for bar stock money. Lose the alloy call on a chunk of 4140 sitting next to a chunk of 1018 and someone runs the wrong one, which is worse than losing the tag entirely.
A scrap tag is not a design problem in the pretty sense. It is a legibility and durability problem with a printing deadline attached. You need a layout a machinist can read at arm's length through safety glasses, on stock that survives a rack in a hot shop, with fields that match how your shop tracks material. And it has to come out the same way in 2026 when you reprint, not slightly different because someone nudged a text box.

Why Shop Tags Fail
The failure modes are boring and repeatable. The tag prints at a size that looked fine on a monitor and is unreadable on a rack. The write-in fields are sized for a fine-tip pen, so the guy with a paint marker writes across three boxes. The stock is copy paper, so the first splash of coolant turns the heat number into a gray smear. The hole gets punched wherever, so the tag tears off the wire in a week.
The other failure is drift. Someone prints a batch, the file gets edited, the next batch has a different field order, and the material handler is reading two layouts. A tag set is only useful if it is boringly consistent, which means the template has to be locked down harder than the design has to be clever. The Fields a Scrap Tag Actually Needs
Start with the field list, because it drives the size and the size drives everything else. A working scrap tag carries eight things.
Alloy and grade. Not "steel". Write the spec the way your certs write it: 304, 316L, 4140 HT, 6061-T6, A36. This is the largest field on the tag and it belongs at the top.
Heat or lot number. The traceability field. If you run anything for pressure, aerospace, structural or food contact, this is what decides whether the drop is usable or scrap. Give it width for a long alphanumeric heat with dashes.
Dimensions. Thickness by width by length for plate, OD and wall by length for tube, diameter by length for round. Label the boxes so nobody guesses the order.
Weight. Actual off the scale or calculated. Add a checkbox for which, because calculated weight is a quote input and actual weight is a sale input.
Origin job. The job or work order the drop came off, so you can charge the material back correctly.
Bin or rack location. The tag and the rack have to agree. A remnant with no location is one nobody finds.
Date. Date cut or date tagged. One date, one format, labeled so people fill it the same way.
Disposition. Three checkboxes: reuse, remelt, sell. This is the field that turns a pile into a decision. Leave it blank at cut time and have whoever does the remnant walk mark it.
Print the labels and leave the values handwritten. You are not printing variable data, you are printing a form that survives.
Sizing and Legibility at Arm's Length
Size the tag to the field list, not the other way around. A 4x6 inch tag holds all eight fields with write-in room for a paint marker. If your shop mostly tags small drops and bar ends, a 3x5 inch tag works when you cut the dimension boxes to two lines. Go smaller and the write-in space stops being usable with gloves on.
The type rule is simple: alloy and grade should be legible from the far side of the aisle, everything else from arm's length. So the alloy value block gets the biggest write-in box, and the printed labels sit at manual body text size, bold, all caps, plain sans serif. Condensed faces and thin strokes are a trap, because thin strokes disappear under dust and a smeared thumb.
Contrast matters more than color. Black on white or black on safety yellow reads through grime, while light gray labels vanish in a shop. Keep rules and box outlines heavy enough to survive a photocopy, and leave the value boxes genuinely empty: example text or a watermark just fights the marker ink.
Building the Template So Reprints Stay Consistent

Toner beats inkjet here. Laser toner is fused and does not run when coolant hits it, while dye inks feather and bleed. With an inkjet, use pigment ink on coated synthetic stock, or laminate.
Print settings. Export the sheet as a press-ready PDF at 300 DPI, set the printer to the heaviest media type it offers so the fuser runs hot enough, disable fit-to-page scaling, and print at 100 percent. Scaling is the most common reason a reprint does not match the first batch. Turn off toner-saving and draft mode so the rules print solid.
Hole punch placement. Punch centered on the short edge, set in far enough that the material between the hole and the edge is wider than the hole itself. A hole punched tight to the edge tears out the first time someone yanks a tag off a bundle.
